So it turns out my problem with my patch for bug #2012 (use a tag list not a tag cloud on the subscription filter interface)? Was not having a space between the span tags.
Oh, man, that reminds me of the times when I'd curse and hiss and spit and bang on things for hours trying to figure out why my changes weren't showing up, only to discover that I hadn't stopped and restarted Apache. *g*
I also fondly remember http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1150 where I submitted a patch that wasn't working for me, saying as much and not flagging it. A month later, fu comitted it. I was only missing a comma for it to work.
